"Football on the Workers and Peasants Red Fleet During the Civil War"

Pavlenko, Andrey Igorevich

Abstract

During the Civil War and foreign intervention in Soviet Russia, despite internal and external political difficulties, sporting events continued to be held. One of the mass sports continued to be football. This sport was popular in Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many football teams created in the Russian Empire continued to function in the early years of Soviet power. In addition, several new football teams appeared, which subsequently successfully participated in the union championship. One of the main problems in the formation of football in the early years of Soviet power was its organization in the Workers and Peasants Red Fleet. During the Civil War, the political organs of the Baltic Fleet managed to create several football collectives from military sailors. These football teams took part both in in-fleet competitions and in competitions at the all-Russian level. It should be noted that it was the development of football during the Civil War that the leadership of the Baltic Fleet paid special attention to.
